My Portuguese cousin Moises Henriques has been called up for the single Twenty20 match against New Zealand! He’ll make his debut for Australia in Sunday’s match at the SCG.

Curiously the selectors have waited for his form to wane before selecting him, in this years (victorious!) Twenty20 campaign he scored 62 at 12.4 and took 3 wickets at 40.33. His one innings of note was 42 off 25 when he opened against Tasmania.

v QLD – 3(4) and 4 overs 2/26

v WA – 9*(5) and 2 overs 0/14

v SA – 6(6) and 3 overs 0/27

v TAS – 42(25) and 2 overs 1/24

v VIC – 1(4) and DNB

v VIC – 1(9) and 3 overs 1/30

Whatever, he’s made the cut and I fully support the inclusion of more young players from Australia’s best domestic Twenty20 team. An added bonus is his name is so similar to my own that it’s almost as if I’m playing for Australia, just look for the drunk, overweight and unfit guy (no, not Jesse Ryder) on Sunday.

Aussie Squad for Twenty20 on Sunday

Michael Clarke (c) – NSW , 27
Brad Haddin (vc) – NSW , 31
Nathan Bracken – NSW , 31
Callum Ferguson – SA , 24
Moises Henriques – NSW , 22
Ben Hilfenhaus – TAS , 25
James Hopes – QLD , 30
David Hussey – VIC , 31
Mitchell Johnson – WA , 27
Peter Siddle – VIC , 24
Adam Voges – WA , 29
David Warner – NSW , 22
Cameron White – VIC , 25

Hussey and Ponting have been “rested”, I suspect Rick’s never played a T20 against New Zealand.

They’ve name a 13 man squad, which is a bit rude for the one discarded player who’ll also miss this round of the Sheffield Shield. Hopefully they’ll give him a bucket to collect donations.

They’ve even tried to recruit Adam Gilchrist, which would have been awesome for the spectacle, but they obviously didn’t front up with enough cash.

Here’s who they’ll be missing tomorrow night

Brad Hodge – avg 42, sr 136. Top Twenty20 run-scorer in Australia. Top Twenty20 run-scorer in the world. Injured in Elimination Final.

David Hussey – avg 32, sr 140. Second top Twenty20 run scorer in Australia. Restrictive bowler. Playing for Oz.

Cameron White – avg 35, sr 154. Destructive batsman and part time bowler.

Boo fúcking hoo. I realise it’s a new experience for Victoria to lose players to the national setup, but this is something that happens to us all the time. Here’s the first choice players on our books that we’ll be missing tomorrow night:

Nathan Bracken – avg 19, eco 7. Worlds top ranked ODI and T20 bowler. Man-hair model. Playing for Australia

David Warner – avg 29.5, sr 150. Destructive opening batsman, playing for Oz.

Michael Clarke – avg 23, sr 130. Quality middle order batsman, economical bowler. Injured playing for Australia

Brad Haddin – avg 20, sr 110. Quality keeper and agressive batsman in superb form.

Stuart Clark – avg 18, eco 6.6. Econimical and threatining bowler. Injured playing for Oz

Nathan Hauritz – avg 15, eco 6.3. Restrictive bowler. Playing for Oz.

I can’t work out why these articles only mention the absent Victorians. On the balance I’d say NSW are in fact more weakened through injury/abscence than Victoria, but obviously both teams are missing a lot of quality. Regardless, it’s hard to agree with the sob story coming from south of the border.

The winner will not only gain entry to the lucrative world club championship, but also the privilege of a Twenty20 lesson from the top dog in Australian domestic Twenty20 cricket at the SCG on Sunday.

The Victorians are píssed off, as having their top players unavailable due to national service is a new problem for them. Now they’ll have to go without the services of Cameron White and David Hussey, who have a ODI on Friday and need their beauty sleep. There is no factual basis to reports that Cameron White Cried, again, at hearing the news, though it does sound likely.

Ryan Harris has been dropped from the national squad so will be available for Queensland, however they’ve replaced him with Mitchell Johnson so that’s probably worse for the New Texas Bulls, who’ll also be missing James Hopes.

CA have also denied requests for the players to be available of for the final, so NSW will be missing David Warner, Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin and Nathan Hauritz.

This could well end up a good experience, as Michael Hussey is keen to explain IPL loyalties come before the state that bought you up, so depending on which IPL teams make the club championship any Australian side could be without their stars when the big bucks are on offer.

Victoria squad: Brad Hodge (capt), Aiden Blizzard, Rob Quiney, Aaron Finch, Andrew McDonald, Matthew Wade, Adam Crosthwaite (wk), Damien Wright, Shane Harwood, Jon Holland, Bryce McGain, Dirk Nannes.

Queensland squad: Chris Simpson (capt), Wade Townsend, Ryan Broad, Lee Carseldine, Nathan Reardon, Glen Batticciotto, Craig Philipson, Chris Hartley (wk), Ryan Harris, Nathan Rimmington, Ben Cutting, Alister McDermott, Ben Laughlin.

Western Australia are awfully píssed off and seeking compensation after the original club championship was postponed due to men with guns. It’s a lot of cash they’re missing out on, and I feel a nice gesture would be for NSW Cricket to buy them a meaningful gift to ease the pain, perhaps a bronze statue of Simon Katich to stick up in the WACA headquarters..

You can bet the team we send to compete in India includes some names that have until this point played no part in the tournament such as Michael Clarke, Phil Jaques, Brett Lee, Stuart Clark and Brad Haddin. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, as any NSW cricketer will know it’s the privilege and also the curse of representing the state that breeds the big names.

I’ve put together a short synopsis of the 5 matches that have earnt us entry into the World Club Championship, and awarded 3-2-1–1 ratings as I feel they’re warranted.

Game 1 vs Queensland in Brisbane

Scorecard
A good bowling effort led by Doug Bollinger‘s 3/22 and well assisted by Moises Henriques 2/26 restricted Queensland early on, however Beau Casson 0/37 and Mark Cameron 0/34 got spanked allowing the Bulls to amass to 161. Thanks to opening batsman Phillip Hughes scoring 80(20) the total was chased down with 2 balls to spare.

Moses’ Player 3-2-1–1 Ratings
3 Doug Bollinger
2 Phillip Hughes
1 Moises Henriques
-1 Beau Casson

Game 2 vs Western Australia in Homebush, Sydney

Scorecard
Tight bowling by Aaron Heal and Marcus North restricted NSW to 6/148 off 20 overs. 18 year old newcomer Stephen Smith was my pick of the batsmen with 34*(21), Dave Warner 28(22) scored freely early on, while Phillip Hughes 35(34) and Dominic Thornley 23(24) got starts but failed to up the tempo sufficiently against WA’s slower bowlers Marcus North 1/27(4) and Aaron Heal 0/22(4).
Nathan Bracken 2/24 was the pick of the bowlers, Dominic Thornley, Stephen Smith and Moises Henriques generally restricted WA to the required rate of 6-7 rpo, while Beau Casson was again spanked leaking 0/26 off his two overs which gave WA the win and led to his being dropped for the remainder of the comp.

Moses’ Player 3-2-1–1 Ratings
3 Stephen Smith
2 Nathan Bracken
1 Dave Warner
-1 Beau Casson

Game 3 vs South Australia in Adelaide

Scorecard
A solid batting performance by South Australia saw all of their batsmen scoring at 6.5 to 8.7 rpo, however they lacked one batsman to deliver the killer punch in their accumulation of 160 runs.
Mark Cameron was tidy with 1/22, Thornley 1/27(3) applied the brakes nicely and Aaron Bird 3/35 contributed vital top order wickets while leaking runs. Nathan Bracken 3/38 gets the bogey rating despite 3 late wickets saving his figures from absolute embarrassment.
Dave Warner 35(35) got the Blues response off to an absolute flyer, nicely assisted by pedestrian Phillip Hughes 30(29) and Dominic Thornley 28(18)

Moses’ Player 3-2-1–1 Ratings
3 Dave Warner
2 Dominic Thornley
1 Mark Cameron
-1 Nathan Bracken

Game 4 vs Tasmania in Homebush, Sydney

Scorecard
A destructive top 3 saw the Tassie Tigers belt 194 thanks to Lockyear 51(29), Dighton 43(29) and Birt 44(17). Dominic Thornley 0/22 was pick of the NSW bowlers with his 4 overs going for less than Stephen Smith’s 1 over 0/23. Doug Bollinger while moderately expensive took the essential wickets of Dighton and Birt, thus keeping the Tigers total below 200.
The destructive form of Dave Warner had him off to play South Africa, allowing the return of Simon Katich 18(12) and despite a solid opening stand with Moises Henriques 42(25) the fireworks were absent down the order and 166 was all we could muster.

Moses’ Player 3-2-1–1 Ratings
3 Dominic Thornley
2 Moises Henriques
1 Doug Bollinger
-1 Stephen Smith

Game 5 vs Victoria at Homebush, Sydney

Scorecard
The penultimate match, NSW entered this 4th on the table with nothing to lose. A brutal bowling spell by dirty Dirk Nannes 4/11(4) hit the Blues hard early on, with Henriques 1(3), Smith 4(6) and Rohrer 7(8) his early victims. O’Keefe 6(6) fell to a run out and only opener Simon Katich 35(26) was able to resist the dark side of Dirk Nannes. Dominic Thornley 36*(36) came out in the 4th over with the score at 4/39 and steadied the ship, batting with the tail and taking the Blues to a depressingly low 128.
Douggy Bollinger 0/12 applied the pressure with some superb tight swing bowling, and Mark Cameron 1/17 kept the other almost as tight. Falling behind the run rate the Victorians shat themselves, giving up 5 run-outs, one each to Cameron, O’Keefe, Rohrer, Bollinger and Smith. I’ll give Simon Katich some credit for these as captain he would have been setting the fields. Victorian captain and serial whinger Brad Hodge summed it up nicely with “It’s a script on how to stuff up a cricket game”. Bravo.
A wonderful team effort from the Blues who now book their tickets to India, there is no villain from this match.

No, not hate… what’s that other word? Love. Yeah. That’s it. I love it when I’m right.

This fucking rocks! David Warner, what a superb debut. There was only one Australian who didn’t enjoy that innings last night, and with 89 off 43 balls it’d be pretty tough for the selectors to not add Dave to the ODI squad now, as I suggested over at Well Pitched on Friday.

The highlight for me was his first ball facing Dale Steyn, knowing this guy is rated as the best quick on earth so he paddles a six over fine leg. Next ball, now that he’s got his eye in, he tonks him over mid wicket for another 6!

Warner faced just 1/4 of the balls bowled to Australia to score 1/2 the runs, this in a team of his childhood heros who he wanted to get autographs from in the changerooms.

Well that’s enough gloating for now, I can’t wait till the second T20 on Tuesday in Brisbane – one scary thought for South Africans is the ball that Warner was eventually caught off in Melbourne at deep long on would have gone for another 6 at the Gabba!

One thing that could be interesting later this year is the IPL as Dave has signed with the Delhi Daredevils and will open the batting with Virender Sehwag – hopefully Sehwag can teach him some restraint!

It’s so refreshing to see another member of this way under-represented state earn promotion and hopefully he’ll get to play in Sunday’s match against the saffas.

Not to say Dave hasn’t earnt this selection, his form in the shorter versions of he game is undeniable.

In late November he broke the NSW One Day record in 34.1 overs by hitting 165* (112) That innings included 19 fours and 9 sixes against the (then) table topping Tasmanian attack. One can only speculate how many he would have scored had we batted first!

This week he took apart a South Australian attack that included a devastating Shaun Tait and Pakistani import Sohail Tanvir with 65(35). He did have some luck, playing on to be bowled by Tait off a no-ball then smashing the free hit over mid-on for one of his 7 fours. Of the 4 sixes Dave hit the highlight was a Tait delivery which he dispatched onto the roof of the Adelaide Oval!

He started the match with that stupid double sided T20 specialist bat, then changed it after a few overs for a real lump of willow.

He’s also a handy slow bowling option, capable of ripping leggies and tight offies depending on his mood. So congrats on the selection Dave, and it’s good to see we are still breeding the big names.

Well it’s about to start, the All Stars vs Australia.

Gilly’s opening on his 37th Birthday, Roy’s back, Brett Geeves to open for Australia, and as is standard practice Ricky’s not playing a Twenty20…. Go the All Stars!

Movember is listed as a charity for this match, hoping to see some decent Mo’s out there as well.

Will update this post as stuff happens.

Dighton plays the right-arm uppercut for 6, nice to see the innovation from the All* straight away. Next one goes for 4, dot, 6. Dighton’s 16*(4).
Gilly to face Tait now, this could be interesting.

Roy’s looking very processed now, glad to see his heads in the right spot to play cricket again.
Slats trying to flog Gilly’s book between balls. A nice change from trying to flog Gilly’s wife between overs I guess.
5 wides from Tait, Haddin hasn’t seen something bounce like that in months
0/31 off 2 overs

Dighton on fire, 0/51 after 3 !!

Turns out Hussey is captain of the all stars. Tait swinging it at around 150k’s. Also has his elbow strapped on like he’s borrowed an arm. Gilly played all through that one, perfect seam position on a great inswinger that just missed off stump. And again, Gilly having all sorts of trouble with Tait. 1 off the over
0/52 off 4

Siddle’s on, seems everyone’s forgotten bout Douggy Bollinger. Gilly’s in the runs now as well, was trying to get Dighton on strike and did so, on the 5th ball. Dighton plays the baseball swipe straight back to siddle who knocks it up with his right, then taps it out of his left, then the ball falls. Good effort, no cigar.
0/67

Tait’s back, Gilly bowled 25(20). World’s best T20 batsman and man voted most likely to be confused with a feret, Brad Hodge.
First ball edged through 2nd slip. Field change, now there’s a 2nd slip. I like this Hussey
Quick single and direct hit from Xavier Doherty, Dighton in by a poofteenth
No, I lie.. 3rd ump gives him the arse. Seems Clarke was a late withdrawl from the match, as opposed to Ponting, who just couldn’t be f’ucked.
Great, Katich comes in to join Hodge, there goes the run rate me thinks.
No ball, Hodge gets an edge and a jumping Haddin catches it to save 4 off the free hit.

Well, Channel 9 have finally pulled their fingers out and are broadcasting this game in HD. Thank f’uck for that.
Katto caught behind off Siddle, 3/75 of 6.3
Dan Marsh in and Siddle bowls a bouncer so short that Marsh doesn’t even have to duck.
Seems like months since there was a boundry, so Hodge absolutely creams a cover drive
3/83 off 6

Langer sitting like a jockey as Heals interviews him. His voice seems so much more appropriate as a jockey. Heals asks what the batting plan is. Apparently scoring lots of runs is at the top.
Xavier Doherty on now and he bowls Dan Marsh for a golden duck. 4/83.
Bill’s in the box now to add some excitement, as Langer comes out for the All Stars.
Bill opens with the second dodgy chicken pun of the night “so the KFC Australian’s are amongst the
chickens at the moment, really doing well”, guess the Colonel paid for channel 9′s HD equipment

Spinners and Hodge have really applied the brakes, Roy bowling with Doherty. This Symonds bloke looks ok, we could have used him in India.
Bob Marley, AC/DC’s old stuff and Come on Irene playing in the crowd with Nicholas talking about how T20 brings in the kids.. who like old music, apparently.

Future PM and IPL billionaire David Hussey bowling now, tidy over. How does anyone watch this ‘cricket’ without 6′s all the time? Boring!
4/114 off 12

Langer going at an impressive run a ball, Hodge about 2. Roy bowling like shit but still tight.

Roy’s subbed himself off for an 8 year fielder now.. and the ball gets belted along the ground straight to him.. Siddle cuts it off and the kid gets an extra run for the All Stars..

More cricket and stuff. Just noticed on the scorecard the All Stars are abreviated to A*S, which looks like they’re censoring ASS. Tidy.
4/196 off 19

Last Over, now they can start hitting it.
Tait to bowl it, I can feel the runs already.
Good over there, 204 in total. Can’t help but think Langer really held them back with 52(43).

Some stupid band between innings, short skirts though, nice.

Australia batting now, Hayden caught early off McGoffin, then Shaun marsh caught off McGoffin in the outfield, by Brendan Drew, who caught it between his legs! Deadset, remarkable dismissal.
2/19 after 3

Australia struggling here, Roy’s in next though, shame about his form.
No, Roy’s in now as Harris throws down the stumps and Watson is back to pose in the mirror.

McGoffin bowling really well, Roy just described him as “their best bowler”, and Hussey agrees. Plan is to play him out to score off the others
Roy throws to the advert, tidy.
3/53 off 7. Asking rate now 11.5

In recognition of this remarkable ocasion, the authorities at Meat-Eating Headquarters have agreed for Beer and Sport to officially release their new logo, in recognition of the fact that their one was as pants as their original name.

Remarkably this age old rivalry has been so hotly contested over the centuries that the ledger is even, which means the winner of Friday’s game will take an unasailable lead that can’t be overturned for several weeks… unless it’s a tie and the bowl-off is also drawn. Or it rains.

Anyway, Mohali Meat-Eaters v Chenai Chuckers. I might even watch this one.

50 over cricket has been growing stale under the leadership of the ICC and it’s sub-continental powerbase for a long time, and never was this more evident than at the debacle that was the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. What should have been the showpiece event was stripped of all character and then dragged on for far too long.

ODI’s have become predictable, formula driven and the consolidatory periods in the 15-40 over period is not giving the Gen Y crowd the constant stimulation they crave and get from competitors to the diet cricket format such as rugby, league, gayfl and soccer.

Crowd nazism from thought challenged security staff is reaching unprecedented levels and severely detracts from the experience. Light beer, outlawing of cameras with 10x zoom, petty restrictoins on bringing in soft drinks from sponsors’ competitors, evicting constructors of “beer snakes”, outlawing of the Mexican wave and criminalising trumpeters are hallmarks of the fun police.

Attempts at law changes have been drawn out and ill-conceived ; “Super”-sub’s and “Power”-play’s were a farcical attempt to Americanize [Sic] the ailing product. Australia’s complete and utter dominance of the format has done little to spark interest. The recent and rare 400+ games which have gone against the norm and provided dare I say, some entertainment.

The only remaining appeal is to executives who crave the bottom line boost from 8 hours of advertisments, predominately in India.

———
Conversely, the T20 concept is fresh, innovating and exciting – all the things that ODI’s used to be. Perhaps this is due to the format being created in the UK, away from the greed and sub-continental influence of the ICC.

Some of the innovations really should have been bought into ODI’s long ago. The free hit is great and the distance measurement for biggest six makes for interesting viewing and facilitates nice highlights packages throughout the tournament, regardless of how dubious the actual measurement is..

I’m in favour of scrapping the pointless ODI tournaments in favour of T20 comps. Does anyone actually remember the results of last years three way series with the Poms and Kiwi’s? Is anyone honestly looking forward to the 7 match series we’re about to start in India? Surely they could have snuck a test in.

3 hours is a good span for an after work event with time for a few cleansing ales, and you never know, they might serve full strength beer! No doubt Cricket Australia will get their hooks into and suck the life out of it in the interest of “families”, so lets embrace it before they get a chance.
The concept of the champions trophy is brilliant, allowing state players to mix it on the International stage in their familiar state environment.

Baggy Green victories are not guaranteed in T20, and our losing to Zimbabwe provided a huge boost to the recent tournament. The fact that the team who play best on the day win is not the randomness that some journalists are suggesting, it’s a just reward for a diet format that with a standout performance from a few individuals a lesser ranked team can upset the giants. I might even get some decent odds betting on the Aussie juggernaut!

Of course test cricket is still the real deal, but if we must have a diet cricket format then I’d choose T20 any day. In terms of growing the game into new markets as well as getting more female supporters to the games. Is the Twenty20 here to stay? Most definately.
