New Zealand Dis-Envowelled by Johnson

Johnson took a fourfer

Johnson took a fourfer

Looks like there’s some life in this wicket, with Mitchell Johnson again being our best bowler as EnZed are dismissed for 156. Proving the wicket was good for all the quicks Lee, Clark and Watson were all able to add 2 wickets to their career totals.

Regular wickets from the Baggy Greens choked the kiwi’s of any momentum, their highest partnership being 35 between Taylor (40) and Flynn (39*).

Daniel Flynn was still there at the end, which is likely what he was hoping for. How else would you explain taking a single off the first ball of a Stuart Clark over when super-bunny Chris Martin is at the other end?

The Aussies take a 58 run 1st innings lead and will look to improve on their first innings effort, and with more favourable conditions they certainly should. At this stage the low and slow scoring match looks typical of the Gabba this year, and will likely be over by day 3!

Tea’s been taken early in the innings break so we’ll be looking at a long third session. Perhaps we’ll go off if it starts to piss down again, unlike last night when Clarke was dismissed in the rain.

No heroics please Hayden and Katich – you both owe me from píss-poor scores in my fantasy league from the first innings.

ICC Rankings Analysis

With the news that Nathan Bracken and Michael Hussey have risen to the top of ICC Rankings for best ODI Bowler and Test Batsman respectively, I thought I’d take a look at the ICC Rankings for cricket for an objective view on the World’s dominant Test and ODI Batsmen, Bowlers and Teams.

Test Cricket

Team
Top Test Team: Australia
Gap from field: 19%

Batting
No 1: Mike Hussey
Dominant nation: Australia with 1, 4 (Ponting) and 9 (Hayden) are the only nation with 3 batsmen in the Top 10

Bowling
No 1: that mother chucker
Dominant Nation: Australia, Sri Lanka are close

  • Aus have 2 (Clark) and 4 (Lee) ; aggregate ranking points: 1646
  • SL have 2 (Murali) and 7 (Vaas) ; aggregate ranking points: 1579
Curiously, Shane Bond is ranked 9th and hasn’t played in 11 months!!

    One Day Cricket

    Team
    Top ODI Team: Australia
    Gap from field: 11%

    Batting
    No 1: MS Dhoni
Dominant Nation: Australia with 2 (Hussey), 4 (Ponting), 9 (Symonds) and 10 (Hayden) are the only nation with 4 batsmen in the Top 10

    Bowling
    No 1: Nathan Bracken
Dominant nation in Top 10: Australia, New Zealand are close

  • Aus have 1 (Bracken), 3 (Johnson), 10 (Lee) ; aggregate points: 2119
  • NZ have 2 (Vettori), 4 (Mills) and 9 (Oram) ; aggregate points: 2094

Well there you have it, the baggy greens are ranked number 1 by a considerable margin in Test and One Day cricket, and have the best performing players in each discipline. No wonder we hold the Ashes, World Cup, Border/Gavaskar Trophy, Chappell/Hadlee Trophy and the ICC Champions Trophy

  • Have the saffas got their mojo back?

South Africa DIDN’T CHOKE! This shocking revelation is up there with the Titanic not sinking or Jaguar making a reliable car. It’s just not cricket.

I suppose there are a few grains of normalcy that we can cling to to believe that all is still right and just in the cricketing universe. I mean South Africa with their mojo back? Please.

    • It was a home game (didn’t seem to help them in the 2003 world cup)
    • It is a nothing series
    • It’s against a Kiwi side routed by injuries and low on morale
    • The Kiwi’s went out of their way to lose (Smith dropped by Vettori, AB Devilliers dropped by Taylor, and the final nail

49.2 Gillespie to Nel, 1 run, dropped! Nel slashes a full and wide delivery up and over backward point, a fielder runs after at is it dies on him, diving out in front and failing to hold on! Very tough catch

Boucher hit a single off the next ball and Andre won the game with another two fours.

Poor kiwi’s. But in reality though it’s a promising sign, there are several reasons not to worry just yet.

    • They weren’t playing Australia
    • It was a nothing game
    • Duckworth Lewis didn’t come into play

Kiwi’s v Saffas and some blog updates

Anyways, I’ve been watching the Kiwi’s take on the Saffas and they’ve finally grown some Bollingers. Maybe not big brass ones, but there’s something dangling and just in time for their Chappel-Hadlee defence…

249 on a fairly difficult wicket with a great knock by How bringing up 90. One funny incident when he was on 49 the african cameraman was going for a walk in front of the sightscreen as Botha was coming in to chuck. How at the last second backed away and dead-balled the delivery while the cameraman ducked and tried to be invisible. Then they were waiting for him to get out of the way and he was completely clueless, walking back and forwards before finally Andre Nel went and ‘escorted’ him out of the way. Laughs all round.

Now they’re backing it up with the ball – the evil Saffas 2/9 with Kyle Mills grabbing some quick wickets. Best of all Kallis is gone and the Saffas are looking a bit vulnerable with their chief probot back in the shed. Gillespie just trapped Smith right in front, but going over said umps. Quite possibly was, not a bad call I guess. 11 runs without scoring and the evil saffas are under some pressure.

Thought I’d whip out photoshop and chuck together a header for the new blog while the Saffas are blocking. Also added a cricinfo scores widget.. not convinced as to it’s usefulness as yet..

This chick is sweedish apparently. I thought they all had blonde hair with blue eyes, but am happy to be proven wrong.
