Test Cricket Era’s

Ponting lying down on the job

Ponting lying down on the job

There seems to be a lot of commentary that the ‘era of Aussie Dominance’ is over, and ‘India is now the Force in World Cricket’. I suspect a lot of this is fed by people wanting Australia to fail, mostly due to the whippings administered by us over the last 15 years and the arrogance exhibited by our team and their supporters. I can’t help but feel partly responsible!

The beginning and end of era’s are notoriously hard to define without the benefit of hindsight, as a changing of the guard can happen over many seasons. For a new era to emerge, one team will have to step up to consistently beat all others, both home and away.

To put the claims that India have achieved this into perspective, here’s a quote from pommy blogger King Cricket.

After winning successive Test series against West Indies, South Africa, South Africa again, Bangladesh, England, Sri Lanka, India and West Indies, Australia finally lost away to India and are now ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING at cricket.

India’s recent run of losing a series against Australia, drawing one against South Africa, losing one against Sri Lanka before winning this one, hints that they are now perhaps the new supreme power in world cricket.

As for Australia’s “decline” it’s worth noting that they’ve never been overly impressive in India ; even in the “era of Baggy Green dominance” they only won a single series! The overall series ledger shows Australia with 3 wins (1956, 1969 and 2004) to India’s 5 (1979, 1996 [1 test series], 1998, 2001, and 2008), with 3 Drawn (1959/60, 1964 and 1986 [1 Test Tied]).

I guess my point is that while the Aussie team has obviously weakened through the retirement of some legends, it’s too early to say if there is another team ready to claim a decade as their own. Australia losing in India is nothing new, and losing there again isn’t all that remarkeable.

India played well and full credit too them, but to be the world power that their population demands they’ll have to cope with some big name retirements, and improve their away record vastly. In Dhoni they have the best captain in world cricket, and Ishant Sharma is a real talent who I hope stays fit and hairy.

India, Australia, South Africa, England and Sri Lanka all have strong Test sides at the moment, and are all capable of beating each other on their day. It’s going to be an interesting period in Test Cricket and I can’t wait.

Vettori on fire

October 29th, 2008

can't spin right

can't spin right

1 over, 1 maiden. 3 wickets. They’re some figures. Bangladesh went off for light at 3/13 rather than face a second spell from big Dan.

It’s not just that he got a triple wicket maiden however, he’s taken out Bangers form batsmen and given me an excuse to pull out the beer bullets

  • Junaid Siddique, primarily in the team due to his name been confusable with Jamie Siddons. Did well in the ODI series but is averaging 3.33 in the Tests. Vettori strikes first ball, comes dancing down the track and misses, McCullum drops the ball but then takes the bails, referred to the third umpire, that is out.
  • Mohammad Ashraful, all purpose giant slayer and Banging Captain, the guy who beat Australia albeit with some help from Roy. Leans forward and gets hit on the pad, de Silva has no hesitation in giving it, that looked plumb.
  • Rajin Saleh, well I haven’t heard of this guy but he’s almost 25 so a veteran in Bangladeshi terms. Averaging an impressive 25.6 and with 7 test 50’s to top score at 89 he sounds like the future. Wonderful stuff, floated up and hit on the pad and again de Silva has no hesitation in giving it, that is hitting middle and leg.

Roy’s path to redemption

October 22nd, 2008

Seems Roy hasn’t done enough to make up for missing that very important last minute team meeting before the Top End Tour in August. You remember the series, we played some one day games against the Kiwi Crushers Bangladesh in Darwin, back in August.

Anyways, Roy’s punishment for going on a pre-booked fishing charter instead of the hastily arranged team meeting to discuss the new seating arrangements for the team bus, is that he was sent home from Darwin and back to club cricket.

The current word is that Roy will have to go through a “staged process” to regain his place. Presumably stage 1 is Watson getting injured, Stage 2 is a jihad on James Sutherland, and Stage 3 is a big wad of cash from his IPL connections.

The main contenders for Jaques’ distinguished position of reserve opening batsman are David Hussey, Brad Hodge and Shaun Marsh. If they’re looking for a like for like replacement they’d have to go Shaun Marsh, as he’s the only one who doesn’t play for Victoria. Unforunately Merv seems to have his way with selections at the moment, so we’ll probably see Brad Hodge ferret like head popping around the nets again.

Really we should be sending an SOS for the Son Of Swampy, he’s an awesome opening batsman and deserves a shot on his own merits. Roy will have to wait for his redemption.
