the fundamental stumbling block of a long-established President’s Council resolution forbidding the appearance of SARU teams against opponents selected along racial lines.
To clarify, the very same board that imposes a quota of non-white players into their rugby team is opposed to their racially selected team playing against a racially selected team!
It would make an interesting precedent if Australia and New Zealand were to refuse to play against the Springboks due to their quota system…
New Zealands race relations commissioner Joris de Bres has written a letter to SARU, however I don’t imagine this paragraph will help the case at all
I appreciate why such a policy would have been adopted, particularly because of the racial discrimination in sport that existed in South Africa under apartheid.

Good point Mo. It’s just a spurious argument so the Springboks don’t get bashed by the Maori. Perhaps our cricketers should pack their bags and bring the chalice home with them!
The funny thing is the Springboks (or Protea’s as their government wants their name changed to be representative of all south africans’), actually want and need to play this game.
It’s their only decent warm up (unless you count Namibia) before taking on the British and Irish Lions – a team comprising the best players of 4 top Rugby Nations.
For the Saffas to join the Wallabies of 2001 and the All Blacks of 2005 they need to win this series and continue the trend that 4 Northern Hemisphere teams still don’t stack up against any 1 Southern Hemisphere POWERHOUSE…
This is very strange, and none more so because of the fact that they really really need this game.
Think the Lions will be a good team this year, and without the preparation needed i can see it being a tough old time for the Saffas.
