David Warner makes Twenty20 squad

Congratulations to NSW opening batsman David Warner for making his way into the national T20 team at the expense of Matthew Hayden. It’s so refreshing to see another member of this way under-represented state earn promotion and hopefully he’ll get to play in Sunday’s match against the saffas.

Not to say Dave hasn’t earnt this selection, his form in the shorter versions of he game is undeniable.

In late November he broke the NSW One Day record in 34.1 overs by hitting 165* (112) That innings included 19 fours and 9 sixes against the (then) table topping Tasmanian attack. One can only speculate how many he would have scored had we batted first!

This week he took apart a South Australian attack that included a devastating Shaun Tait and Pakistani import Sohail Tanvir with 65(35). He did have some luck, playing on to be bowled by Tait off a no-ball then smashing the free hit over mid-on for one of his 7 fours. Of the 4 sixes Dave hit the highlight was a Tait delivery which he dispatched onto the roof of the Adelaide Oval!

He started the match with that stupid double sided T20 specialist bat, then changed it after a few overs for a real lump of willow.

He’s also a handy slow bowling option, capable of ripping leggies and tight offies depending on his mood. So congrats on the selection Dave, and it’s good to see we are still breeding the big names.

  1. What’s this I hear about him using some 2-sided bat?

A cricketer from NSW cheating? Who’d have thought that…

  2. He’s got a sponsorship deal with Gray Nicholls for some stupid specialist T20 bat that has a ‘paddle’ on the back for reverse sweeps.

The double-sided bat, which is set to revolutionise the way cricket is played now, is going to make its debut in Australia`s domestic Twenty20 tournament.

Hard-hitter David Warner of New South Wales and Aiden Blizzard of Victoria will try out the new bats that is bound to give batsman an edge in some way or the other in the shortest version of the game.

Warner tried out the new bat at the SCG nets for the first time on Sunday.

“Generally when I`m playing the reverse I`m swapping hands, and now I don`t really have to, so it`s going to be better. It gives you a couple of extra seconds,” said Warner, who signed a contract with Indian Premier League side Delhi Daredevils worth more than USD 250,000.

Warner will try out the new bat out in New South Wales` Twenty20 match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval tomorrow while Blizzard will use it for Victoria against WA at the MCG on Thursday.

The back of the bat could come in handy while going for a reverse sweep or reach forward and scoop the ball over the fielder but Warner does not believe it will give batsman too much of an advantage.

“If people think it`s going to be an advantage to batsmen, I have to disagree. The person who is using the timber is in control, so I just see it as another shot for other people to try as well,” Warner was quoted as saying.

“Everyone is trying it these days, especially in Twenty20, so why not have the back of the bat flat as well? It makes it easier, but it`s not a real advantage. You`ve still got to play the shot.”

  3. “It gives you a couple of extra seconds,”

Bloody hell; I realise these are dark days for you lot, but how slow are the bowlers in Aus domestic cricket?

  4. Nice pickup… looking at Warner’s NSW Blues profile page, under “What makes you laugh the most?” he answers “Myself with my stupid remarks!”

  5. No doubt a good catch for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. Just can’t wait to see him bat.
